Page 4 of 6 It was the Sparkers who first opposed the Devos, three years after the Rebirthing. They had discovered an ancient cache of hardware that had been missed during the purges, and began fighting back with messages that technology could ultimately rebuild society, even though it had destroyed it. The first Sparkers were taken by the Devos, and were never seen or heard again. Since then, Sparkers have gone underground. Wireless broadcast towers, raised under cover of darkness and concealed before dawn, allowed communication between cells, and gatherings were organised. The first rally, forever labeled in the old tongue as “Reinstall”, was touted as a simple fair, with fronted juggling acts and many folk bands serenading the masses. Beneath the facade, however, was a deeper political meaning. No-one suspected that the crowd-pleasing lights that kept the night at bay for hours weren't actually easily-explained natural phenomena, but actually tiny xenon bulbs, powered by small concealed batteries. It wasn't until Reinstall had finished and again disappeared that the truth was known to the public, and by then it was too late for the Devos to to anything. The people of Earth continued to live in the manner dictated by the Organic Devolution, but the install file of dissent had been uploaded.
