Page 2 of 6 But not the Launchpad. Heralded as the gateway to other solar systems and beyond, the Launchpad was designed to fling spaceships as fast and as far away from Earth as possible. Unfortunately, the satellite's orbit was irreparably compromised by what was has now been labeled an “Act of Newton”. The equal and opposite reaction of the first and only ship to leave the Launchpad's magnetic slingshot caused the satellite to plummet dirtwards, and it was only by a desperate act of nuclear conkers that the planet was saved, if you can call this salvation. The missile's blast managed to deflect the Launchpad from chiseling Australia off the globe, but the widespread nuclear fallout poisoned millions, and the EMP killed everything with a charge from London to Wellington. The stock markets disappeared in a second. Electricity to hospitals, fire alarms, bank vaults, prisons, warehouses, freezers and houses was lost. The survivors of “The Burning” turned in despair upon the technology that had promised the galaxy, but had cost them their own home. In a world with no mechanical or technological aid, electrical devices were useless except as fuel to warm the starving masses. And even in their swan song the digital idols of a lost age had one final trick up their sleeves. The poisonous gases from burning plastic nearly double the death toll from The Burning, and sent countless more insane. And thus the Organic Devolution was born.
