Dalek candidate refuses to budge despite claims he'll split the right wing vote. Campaign staff at Dalek Snowdon’s headquarters are playing down rumours that the Mayoral hopeful has come under pressure to step down and avoid splitting the right wing vote. The Dalek candidate has been making good headway with his campaign following last Saturday’s altercation at Council offices over problems with his signature on the official paperwork.
But sources inside his campaign have hinted at pressure coming from Wellington to pull out of the Mayoral race. “We can’t name names at this point,” said one staffer, “But there have been phone calls and emails flying about over the last couple of days, all hinting that Dalek Snowdon should step down and let John Banks have a clear run at the grumpy, dyspeptic, right wing vote. "But Dalek Snowdon feels that if anyone should pull out of the race it is Mr Banks.” Dalek Snowdon himself was keeping tight lipped on the subject during a Meet, Greet & Exterminate appearance at Sylvia Park Shopping Mall today that left dozens of shoppers and mall staff as little more than piles of irradiated dust. So who is behind the emails? Acting National Party Under-Spokesperson Miles St John Bad-Temper was reluctant to talk when reached by phone. “We really have nothing to say on the Auckland Mayoralty issue,” he said, “Obviously we’d be thrilled if good old Banksie got back in and kicked a few backsides up there, but, like that saying has it, ‘I couldn’t possibly comment.’ "As for Dalek Snowdon, we really haven’t made our minds up yet. On one hand, he’s a business-being and member of the Business Round Table, lives in a big house and sends his kids to private schools. Very much our sort of person in fact. "But on the other hand, he’s an immigrant and a member of an ethnic minority. You see the problem here?” |
